Dear Parents and students,
I am very excited to be your child’s teacher in a year full of challenges, new friends and new experiences. Shifting from a younger grade involves many changes for students, such as more challenging assignments, group projects, and more options such as school monitors and sports teams.
In my class students can expect to receive assigned homework at least three times per week. A query many parents have is “How much time should my child be spending on homework?” The time will vary depending on each student, but between thirty and sixty minutes for Math, Reading, and Writing assignments should be adequate. If no homework is specifically assigned, students should be reading and practicing math skills on a daily basis, such as memorizing times tables or doing column addition and subtraction. If parents need materials or website recommendations, please let me know. More time may be needed for projects in other subjects such as Science and Social Studies, but if students budget their time, then the workload can be spread out over the weeks before it is due.
In Math, I will be giving homework on set days each week. Each Tuesday, students will begin a new math lesson that will be followed by class-work on Wednesday and homework on Thursday. Following a review on Friday, a test or quiz will be given on Monday. Homework in other subjects will be on a less regular basis, and checking your child’s planner each evening will help to inform you of other work. I will be sending most tests home to be signed so you will know how your child is doing in various subjects.
Planners will be date stamped everyday after students have filled them in and are brought home for parents to read and sign. Please check your child’s planner each day to keep abreast of homework and upcoming school activities. Planners are checked regularly so feel free to leave notes about any concerns, questions or upcoming absences. Each day, the homework is posted on our class blog which is prteachtech.blogspot.com.
Lastly, I would like to put out a call for parent volunteers who could spare a few hours a month in our class. Activities could range from reading aloud to students, preparing materials or assisting with the lesson at hand. We will also need parents to come along on a variety of field trips throughout the year to supervise and transport children.
If you have any queries or matters that you wish to discuss, please do not hesitate to call the school at 485 6164, email me at delliot@sd47.bc.ca or stop by to book a time for us to meet regarding your child. (after school is best)
I look forward to an exciting and productive year and hope to meet you all soon!
Sincerely,
